Acuscope/Myopulse - Frequently Asked Questions
We have received our training and follow the protocols developed by John Thorp of the Thorp Institute. We are representatives for the Thorp Institute and may assist you in purchasing equipment through them and allowing you to recieve their excellent training.
The Electro-Acuscope and Electro-Myopulse are the most advanced technology in pain control and injury trauma rehabilitation. These FDA approved, Class II medical devices are input/output-controlled instruments designed for the precise treatment delivery required to control even the most difficult pain, trauma and injury cases, including a wide variety of muscle and connective tissue problems.
The microchips within the Electro-Acuscope are programmed to treat neurological tissue of all body systems while the Electro-Myopulse is programmed to specifically find and treat at 100 x per second electrical irregularities in muscle, tendon, ligament, bone and fascia and therefore, combined are capable of monitoring and treating both acute and chronic disorders, as well as managing generalized stress imbalances.
Simply put, these devices assist the body to achieve homeostasis, which is its natural state of well being, by correcting electrical abnormalities in area of disease or injury.
However, in order to adequately explain how the Electro-Acuscope and Electro-Myopulse work, it is appropriate to begin by considering certain fundamental aspects of living tissue. The body is made up of a vast number of cells. In many ways, these cells act like tiny batteries, storing and releasing energy, doing their work of taking in nutrients, releasing waste products, repairing and reproducing themselves, etc. Each cell, like any battery, has a measurable electrical charge, which must be maintained in order to function properly.
Energy flows constantly between all cells throughout the electrical circuitry of the body. When damage or trauma occurs to living tissue, there is a disruption in the electrical capacity of the involved cells and after an initial surge, there results a measurable decrease in the production and flow of energy through the electrical network of the involved tissues. This condition is generally accompanied by pain in the area and often results in the body's inability to completely repair itself. Thus, lengthy rest periods and inactivity are often prescribed in order to attain eventual restoration of normal function. The Electro-Acuscope and Electro-Myopulse treatments have been likened to putting a "jump start" on the dead battery of a car.
Since the instrument has both feedback and therapeutic functions, it actually provides auditory and numerical readouts, which indicate the locations where tissue is damaged, or unhealthy. Once abnormal areas are located, the devices can then treat the tissue according to its needs. An experienced therapist can interpret the sounds and numbers, which reflect the amount of conductivity passing through the tissue between treatment probes and can determine a course of therapy based upon these readings.
Yes, studies have found that the Electro-Acuscope and Electro-Myopulse positively effect the production of ATP, sodium pump effect and Krebs cycle of the cell, thus enhancing the cell's ability to reproduce itself in a regenerative, instead of a degenerative, phase.
In 1991, two research scientists, Dr. Erwin Neher and Dr. Bert Sackmann won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine by detecting electrical currents of a trillionth of an ampere in the membrane, or surface of a cell. These findings substantiate the viability of the Electro-Acuscope and Electro-Myopulse over other micro-current devices that use tremendously higher currents of a millionth of an ampere. In addition the intelligent "cybernetic" (missile guidance technology) chips in the Electro-Acuscope ensure that there is never any electrical bombardment on the body.
Additional research findings have shown increased range of motion, a decreased healing time and progressive wound healing through the use of the Electro-Acuscope and Electro-Myopulse. Detailed studies are available upon request.

Currently, Healing Waves, LLC does not take insurance.
Typical Patient Responses range from immediate and complete recovery in one treatment to an initial increased discomfort then slow and steady recovery. In some cases it may take 3-10 treatments before a breakthrough occurs.
The effectiveness and sustainability of the treatments is always relative to the patient and their commitment to supporting the healing process, which includes proper hydration, nutrition and physical exercise.
The most common side effect is the reduction and elimination of pain. As a result of the increased detoxification, patients may experience atypical symptoms including but not limited to diarrhea, night sweats, headaches, nausea, flu-like symptoms etc. This is actually a good sign indicating that something is shifting in the body and the toxins are ready to 'move out.'
The Technician will administer micro-current treatment using either plates, probes, or immersion an an area (hands or feet) in water, or a combination of these applied to specific areas of your body. An electrolyte gel will be applied to the plates and probes to facilitate conductivity of the equipment's output. You should always be comfortable during the treatment-if you begin to feel any discomfort, such as a stinging, let the practitioner know so that they can adjust the equipment accordingly.
Treatments are approximately one hour. You may be asked to perform some specific tasks during the treatment to determine the next course of action (i.e., moving in the area of pain-an arm, a leg, bending at the waist etc.) Prior to and at the end of each session you will be asked a number of questions about any changes you may have noticed.
Prior to beginning treatment the practitioner will discuss your case with you and ask questions about your situation to determine an appropriate starting point for treatment. Dress comfortably in sweats or loose clothing. You may need to remove some clothing to facilitate access to the areas of pain. The practitioner will provide a means to keep you draped for comfort. During treatment you will experience a very relaxed state of mind.
A research physicist, Dr. Anthony Nebrensky, who assisted in developing missile guidance technology as well as the EEG, EKG and EMG devices, developed the Myopulse and Acuscope devices. The company he and his wife formed, BioMedical Design Inc., was established in 1974 here in the US where the equipment is manufactured to this day.
The Electro-Acuscope and Electro-Myopulse are considered TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) devices in that they use electrical stimulation, however, unlike TENS devices that simply block a pain signal or increase blood flow, the Acuscope and Myopulse have a delivery and read treat mechanism that enhances cell food (ATP) production, essentially taking a cell to a regenerative state electrically.
The technology has been available to the elite and pro athletes for twenty years. It was sold to doctors and chiropractors with a small booklet of directions, assuming that the practitioners would know how and where to apply it on the body. As a result of the lack of training, these practitioners did not see the results that we at Thorp Institute have consistently achieved with our protocols.
Yes, if you are a licensed medical practitioner. If not, and you wish to use the instruments for your own home use, a prescription is required from your doctor. However, if you wish to become a sales representative for the Thorp Institute and adhere to the strict demonstration guidelines while presenting to medical practitioners no prescription is necessary.
Anyone can become a technician by attending training and purchasing equipment, however, since these are Class II medical devices they must be used under the supervision of a licensed medical practitioner (Doctors, Naturopaths, Chiropractors, Acupuncturists, etc.). It is best to be aligned with a medical practitioner prior to becoming trained.
The Electro-Acuscope and Electro-Myopulse devices create a powerful new income stream for any medical practice.
A certified technician monitors the patient's comfort by adjusting intensity. Technicians treat as a patient directs to areas of pain and adjusts the frequency as the biofeedback directs.
The training is five days or 40 hours.
No. You must purchase them from a distributor, such as us.
John S. Thorp, President and Director of Thorp Institute established in 1995, is one of the foremost authorities on the Electro-Acuscope and Electro-Myopulse. His training program is the most intensive and effective.
In 1986, John Thorp shattered his tibia, fibula and femur and was told that without a total knee replacement he would be crippled. Thorp had been a successful Hollywood stuntman on such shows as Hawaii Five O, The Six Million Dollar Man, Magnum PI, Jake and the Fat Man and a host of others. A total knee replacement would have meant an end to his career and the life style he loved. Fortunately, Lee Majors recommended that he try this new and highly regarded therapy that had been thrust into the limelight by professional athletes such as Terry Bradshaw, Joe Montana, and golfing great, Jack Nicholas.
The results were incredible. A year from the date of his injury, he competed in his first triathlon on a leg the doctors said would never bend. He returned to the occupation he loved and began sharing this amazing technology with his colleagues. He proved, by working on horses, that it was not just a placebo effect or mind over matter that created his dramatic recovery. Every horse, as well as the people he treated, had the same incredible results: a reduction of chronic pain and reduction of recovery time.
In 1988, Thorp attended the Institute of Oriental Medicine and studied acupuncture. Concurrently, Thorp became licensed in the state of Hawaii as a massage therapist. In 1990, Castle Medical Center in Hawaii hired Thorp in their "work-well" rehabilitation center. Overseeing 40 plus patients a day gave Thorp the opportunity to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that his specific protocols had a 90 % success rate in the reduction of chronic pain.
Thorp has owned and managed two medical clinics of his own- Balance Body Center in Hawaii and Thorp Institute of Alternative Medicine at the Westwood Medical Center in Los Angeles.
Mr. Thorp now oversees regular training and is focused on building a national network of trained technicians. Once the network is well established, John Thorp plans to release his book and commence a national media campaign to promote this amazing healing modality and his many insights into achieving and maintaining wellness.
